Apple working on smart glasses, prepares a new chip to power them

Apple is reportedly developing its own smart glasses and is in the process of designing a powerful new chip to run them. The move signals the tech giant’s continued push into the wearables and augmented reality (AR) space, aiming to create a lightweight, user-friendly product that builds on the foundation laid by its Vision Pro headset.

The upcoming smart glasses are expected to be significantly more compact than the Vision Pro, focusing more on practicality and daily usability. While the Vision Pro was marketed as a high-end, mixed reality headset, Apple’s new wearable appears to be geared toward a mainstream audience with a greater emphasis on portability, comfort, and long battery life.

To make this possible, Apple is working on a specialized chip tailored to the needs of AR devices. Unlike the chips used in iPhones or Macs, this processor will be designed to handle real-time visual processing, efficient power management, and seamless integration with other Apple devices.

Although the product is still in early development and likely years away from launch, insiders suggest that Apple sees smart glasses as a critical part of its future beyond smartphones. The company reportedly wants the device to eventually replace or complement the iPhone for certain tasks, such as navigation, notifications, and media consumption.

Apple has yet to confirm any details officially, but the ongoing investment in AR and custom silicon indicates that the company is positioning itself to lead the next wave of consumer tech innovation.
