Employment in India grown faster than working-age population: World Bank report

A recent World Bank report has highlighted a positive trend in India’s labour market, revealing that employment in the country has been growing at a faster pace than its working-age population. This marks a significant shift compared to pre-pandemic years.

The report noted that between 2021 and 2023, employment in India grew at an annual average rate of 3.2%, surpassing the 1.9% growth in the working-age population. This improvement comes after a period of stagnation from 2015 to 2019, when employment growth had slowed. Increased participation from women in the workforce and strong post-pandemic economic recovery have been identified as key contributors to this growth. The World Bank also highlighted the rise in the share of formal employment, especially in the manufacturing and services sectors, along with a decline in the agriculture sector’s share.

Despite the encouraging trend, the report emphasized the need for sustained job creation and policy support to ensure inclusive growth, particularly for India’s rapidly expanding young population.
