OpenAI Postpones Open‑Weight AI Model, Teases Major Summer Upgrade

OpenAI has delayed the release of its highly anticipated open‑weight AI model, now slated for “later this summer” instead of June, CEO Sam Altman revealed on X. He attributed the shift to an “unexpected and quite amazing” breakthrough from the research team, promising that the extra time will yield a substantially improved product.

This decision comes amid intensified competition: Mistral recently unveiled its Magistral reasoning models, while China’s Qwen labs introduced hybrid models capable of toggling between thoughtful and rapid answers. OpenAI aims to equip its open‑weight variant with reasoning capabilities on par with its proprietary o‑series models, and possibly include advanced features like cloud-model connectivity for complex queries.

Altman emphasized that this release will restore OpenAI’s standing in the transparent AI ecosystem. With the open-weight model delayed, only a standout performance can warrant the extension—and the company’s reputation depends on it.
