"OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admits he is ‘scared’ to use AI"

If the CEO of OpenAI is scared of AI, maybe it's time we stop and reflect—before we ask yet another bot to turn our selfies into Studio Ghibli-style fan art (which, let’s be honest, is kind of an insult to real artists).

On a recent episode of This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Sam Altman—the brain behind ChatGPT—admitted he sometimes hesitates to use certain AI tools himself. Why? Because even he doesn’t know where his personal data might end up or how it might be used. Yep, the guy who helped build the tech isn’t 100% sure it's safe. That’s not nothing.

Sure, AI is trendy and totally hyped, but it’s worth asking: at what cost? Altman pointed out that if OpenAI slows down, someone else will speed up—and that could put humanity in a tight spot. The wrong hands could turn AI from helpful to harmful, fast.

Things got even more philosophical when the conversation veered into how AI might reshape our identity. Will humans lose their edge? Maybe. But Altman remains optimistic. Even in an AI-dominated world, he believes we’ll find ways to stay center stage—because that’s what humans do.

Yes, job loss is a scary reality. But Altman also thinks AI could free people to explore more creative, meaningful paths. Still, the shift won’t be easy for everyone.

Disruption? Inevitable. But hey, maybe liberation is too.
