OpenAI to open its first India...

The AI wave has officially rolled into India, and it is not just passing through. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced it will open its very first India office in New Delhi later this year. Yes, the American powerhouse led by Sam Altman is setting up shop on desi soil, hiring a local team, and promising to design tools tailored for the Indian market. Translation: AI that not only speaks your language but also understands your quirks.

India, by the way, is already ChatGPT’s second largest user base after the US, and one of the fastest growing markets in the world. In fact, weekly active users have multiplied more than four times in the last year. So the move feels less like a surprise and more like an overdue acknowledgment of just how chatty Indians are with AI.

Altman himself is brimming with optimism. He called India’s AI energy “incredible” and highlighted the country’s recipe for success—brilliant tech talent, a buzzing developer ecosystem, and the government’s backing through the IndiaAI Mission. His words made it clear that this office is not just about bringing AI to India but about building AI with India.

Adding a stamp of approval from the government side, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that OpenAI’s arrival cements India’s rising stature as a global leader in digital innovation. With investments already flowing into AI infrastructure and enterprise-scale solutions, he sees the partnership as a big step in ensuring every citizen feels the benefits of artificial intelligence in daily life.

So, while the rest of the world debates how to catch up with AI, India is getting ready to co-create it. With OpenAI anchoring itself in Delhi, this is more than just an office launch. It is the start of a partnership where India is not simply a market but a key player in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
