Mark Zuckerberg is once again charging full steam into the AI arms race, this time with a bold corporate shuffle that feels less like housekeeping and more like staging for battle. Meta has split its Superintelligence Labs into four shiny new units, each tasked with pushing the company closer to the holy grail of “personal superintelligence”—machines smarter than humans in just about everything.

At the helm of this restructure is Alexandr Wang, the 28 year old wunderkind freshly crowned as Meta’s chief of AI. His internal memo reads like a war strategy, assigning generals to key fronts. The TBD Lab, a secretive squad, will wrestle with giant models and work on an ominously named “omni” system, which may end up understanding text, audio, video and who knows what else. FAIR, the company’s long standing research arm, will now funnel its breakthroughs straight into model training. Products and Applied Research, led by ex GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, will sprinkle AI into the apps that keep Meta’s billions glued to their screens. And then there is MSL Infra, commanded by veteran Aparna Ramani, who will build the hardware and digital backbone strong enough to hold all this up.

Of course, Meta being Meta, the reshuffle also comes with a talent raid. The company has been snapping up top researchers from rivals, much like a football team buying out every star striker in sight. Whether all this centralisation under Wang’s watch accelerates the race toward true superintelligence or just makes Silicon Valley even more anxious remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Zuckerberg is not just playing to keep up. He is aiming for checkmate.
