R Ashwin is never one to mince words, and this time he has turned the spotlight on India’s Asia Cup squad. The veteran spinner admitted he was a little surprised at the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer from the Suryakumar Yadav-led 15-member team. The tournament begins September 9, with India kicking off their campaign against hosts UAE before the much-anticipated clash with Pakistan on September 14.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin called selection “a thankless job” but emphasized the importance of clear communication with players who are dropped. “I just hope Jaiswal and Iyer were given a call and told the reasons,” he said, adding that while he fully understood Shubman Gill’s inclusion as vice-captain, he still felt for the two youngsters left out.
Gill, who impressed with 754 runs in the recent England Test series, returns to the T20I squad after more than a year and has already been entrusted with leadership responsibilities in the post-Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli era. His form made him an obvious pick, yet Ashwin argued that dropping Jaiswal, who featured in the T20 World Cup 2024, and Iyer was harsh.
