Hibiscus tea, made from the dried calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa, is often called a “superdrink” because it offers many science-backed health perks. It’s caffeine-free, ruby-red in colour, tart in taste, and rich in antioxidants, plant compounds, and minerals. Research suggests it may help lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, improve cholesterol (lower “bad” LDL and triglycerides, sometimes boost “good” HDL), regulate blood sugar, aid weight management, fight inflammation, support liver health, offer antibacterial/antimicrobial effects, boost hydration and electrolyte balance, and possibly help with hormonal balance (PMS/menopause symptoms). It’s generally safe for most people, but moderation is key and some medical conditions or medications could interact.
