COVID-19 Vaccines May Help Some Cancer Patients Fight Tumours

Preliminary research shows that widely used mRNA Pfizer–BioNTech COVID‑19 vaccine and Moderna COVID‑19 vaccine shots may give some cancer patients an unexpected benefit: in people with advanced lung or skin cancer who were being treated with immune-checkpoint inhibitors, receiving one of these vaccines within 100 days of starting therapy was associated with significantly longer survival. The effect appears independent of viral infection and is attributed to the mRNA technology acting as an immune stimulant, helping overcome tumours that tend to evade immune attack. The study analysed nearly 1,000 patients and found that lung cancer patients who received the vaccine were almost twice as likely to be alive after three years compared to those who didn’t, while melanoma patients also saw notably improved median survival.
