Eyes do more than reflect emotions they can also reveal critical health conditions. Medical experts warn that several diseases show early signs through changes in the eyes, often before other symptoms emerge.
One of the most common is diabetes, which can damage retinal blood vessels, leading to diabetic retinopathy. High blood pressure is another, often detected through narrowed or bleeding vessels during an eye exam. High cholesterol may present as a greyish ring around the cornea, known as arcus senilis. Thyroid disorders, such as Graves’ disease, can cause bulging eyes and discomfort. Liver issues may show up as a yellow tint in the whites of the eyes a sign of jaundice.
Routine eye check-ups are crucial, not just for vision, but for overall health monitoring. Ophthalmologists advise regular screenings, especially for individuals over 40 or those with underlying health risks, to catch these warning signs early.
