Cataracts in Young Adults: A Growing Concern Beyond Old Age

While cataracts are commonly associated with ageing, medical experts now report a noticeable rise in cases among young adults. Once considered a condition of the elderly, cataracts are increasingly being diagnosed in individuals in their 20s and 30s due to factors like genetics, diabetes, trauma, prolonged steroid use, and excessive screen exposure.

Symptoms include blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and difficulty seeing at night issues often overlooked by younger patients. Early detection is crucial, as untreated cataracts can lead to significant vision loss.

Ophthalmologists advise regular eye check-ups, especially for those with risk factors, and stress the importance of UV-protective eyewear and a balanced diet. Although surgery remains the only effective treatment, lifestyle changes and early intervention can help manage the risk in younger populations.
