Chronic Venous Insufficiency: 9 Key Causes and Early Warning Signs

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a circulatory disorder where veins struggle to return blood from the legs to the heart, often leading to swelling, pain, and skin changes. Experts identify nine primary causes behind this condition.

Prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, aging, and pregnancy are major risk factors. A sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and a family history of vein problems further elevate the risk. Prior leg injuries or blood clots can also impair venous function.

Early symptoms include leg heaviness, visible varicose veins, cramping, and skin discoloration especially around the ankles. If left untreated, CVI may progress to ulcers or chronic leg pain.

Doctors urge early diagnosis and preventive measures like regular exercise, leg elevation, and compression stockings to manage symptoms. Recognizing these signs early can help prevent long-term complications and improve vascular health.
