Cambridge Study Links Air Pollution to Higher Dementia Risk

A recent study by the University of Cambridge has found a strong link between prolonged exposure to air pollution and an increased risk of dementia. Researchers analyzed data from over 30,000 participants aged 50 to 90, revealing that those living in areas with high pollution levels faced a significantly higher likelihood of cognitive decline.

The study focused on fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a common pollutant from vehicles and industrial emissions. Long-term exposure was found to accelerate memory loss and impact brain function, even in individuals without prior neurological conditions.

Experts warn that while aging remains a key factor, environmental triggers like pollution play a critical role in brain health. The findings reinforce the urgent need for cleaner air policies and better urban planning to combat the rising burden of dementia-related illnesses across aging populations worldwide.
