Nargis’s Posthumous Dream Warning Kept Sunil Dutt From Remarrying

Actor-politician Sunil Dutt’s lifelong devotion to Nargis hinged on a warning delivered after her death. Their romance ignited in 1957 on the blazing set of Mehboob Khan’s Mother India, where Dutt rescued the superstar from a fire. They wed in 1958 and remained inseparable until cancer claimed Nargis in May 1981, days before son Sanjay’s debut film released.

Grief consumed Dutt, and friends urged him to remarry for the sake of his three children. Then Nargis’s niece Zahida Hussain reported a vivid dream: the late actress insisted, “Tell your uncle I will never let him live in peace if he marries again.” Dutt replied that there could never be “another Mrs Dutt” and stayed true to that vow for the remaining 24 years of his life, raising the family alone and cementing one of Bollywood’s most enduring love stories.
