The prestigious Cannes Film Festival, taking place from May 13 to 24, 2025, is witnessing a strong Indian presence this year, with four standout films gaining global attention.
1. Homebound
Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound is set to premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival. The film stars Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, with Vishal Jethwa in a supporting role. Produced by Karan Johar, the film also boasts Martin Scorsese as its executive producer. The selection highlights the film's fresh voice and artistic depth, making it a highly anticipated screening.
2. Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest)
A restored version of Satyajit Ray's 1970 classic is being showcased under Cannes Classics, a segment dedicated to celebrating cinematic masterpieces. The screening will be attended by veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, one of the original cast members. The restoration is being presented as part of efforts to preserve and honor India’s cinematic heritage.
3. Tanvi The Great
Actor Anupam Kher steps into the director’s chair with Tanvi The Great, which will be presented at the Marché du Film, Cannes’ renowned film market. The film’s presence in this space signals strong international interest and potential global distribution opportunities.
4. A Doll Made Up of Clay
This student film by Ethiopian director Kokob Gebrehweria Tesfay, produced by Sahil Manoj Ingle from the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), has been selected for La Cinef. This section is reserved for emerging filmmakers from leading film schools and is a significant platform for discovering new talent.
These selections mark a proud moment for Indian cinema, highlighting its creative diversity, global appeal, and the emergence of new voices alongside timeless classics.
